Below are photos of a project currently underway in the River Crest area of Fort Worth, the same neighborhood featuring houses by John F. Staub and David Adler.  The clients, interior designer and contractors have been passionate about the design and it has been a pleasure to work with them.

The client's original intent was to create a new house that felt like a traditional, old house.  Along the way, they became enthusiastic fans of the Arts and Crafts movement as it occured in England over 125 years ago, and studied closely the work of CFA Voysey, Baillie Scott and others.  Although it is a new house with many modern conveniences, it seems to convey the original intent of feeling like it has been in the neighborhood for many years.

Below are images from our June 30, 2010 visit to Gravetye Manor.  Karen and I had a nice lunch and enjoyed the house and gardens.  Though nice, the gardens were not as well maintained as the nearby gardens of Town Place we visited earlier that morning.

  • The Elizabethan manor house dates to 1598.
  • Once owned by William Robinson, the celebrated Arts & Crafts horticulturalist and gardener.
  • Is currently a hotel operated by Relais & Châteaux.

Attached are a *few* photos of our visit to Great Dixter in Sussex on July 1, 2010.

  • Original 15th century house purchased by Nathaniel Lloyd around 1909.  An additional house was moved, reassembled, and combined with a new work by Edwin Lutyens under an expansive, sweeping roof design.
  • Arts & Crafts garden layout by Edwin Lutyens.
  • Garden design by Christopher Lloyd and his mother, Daisy.

I stumbled upon a scanned copy of the Yearbook of the Dallas Architectural Club (1920), which was a catalog of their first exhibition February 11-18, 1922.  I wanted to share the image above by local Dallas architect Ralph Bryan.  I thought this was an inspirational rendering worth posting.
